We are currently seeking a new Legal Research Specialist to join our Lawyaw team. This role is available to candidates across Canada (excluding Quebec) and the United States (some exceptions may apply).

Acquired by Clio in 2021, Lawyaw is a SaaS platform focused on increasing convenient access to legal services with technology. Our platform solves a fundamental gap in the current legal automation market by making it easy to incorporate programmable documents into digital legal workflows. We work with more than 1,500 law firms, legal aid organizations and non-profits to generate more than 40,000 legal documents per day, which helps our users save time and reduce errors on routine legal drafting and court forms. Our tools are being used to help people more conveniently access their rights and legal protections, and our team is growing quickly.

What you’ll work on:

  • Researching and analyzing all applicable state, federal, and agency codes, rules, and standing orders to determine the universe of all relevant litigation deadlines and supported court forms within a jurisdiction. (E.g., deadlines for filing and serving motions, noticing depositions, propounding or responding to discovery.);
  • Drafting clear, concise, and accurate descriptions of the identified rules and court form changes, taking nuances of each jurisdiction into consideration;
  • Synthesizing all applicable service rules, time computation rules, and local court holidays to ensure deadlines are calculated correctly;
  • Researching and amending existing rule sets in legal calendaring software to ensure customers have access to most current version of rules and identifying updated court forms;
  • Monitoring and tracking websites for rule and court form amendments, maintaining court/rules webpage database for monthly scans, and performing manual update monitoring scans per court-specific amendment schedule.
  • Assisting other team members with legal research assignments for new rule sets, and to support court form expansion and customer engagement; 
  • Assisting customers with general rules support concerning procedural questions and calculations of deadlines based upon applicable rules/statutes;
  • Identifying opportunities to assist customers through new content and engagement programming;
  • Develop a deep understanding of all customer offerings and internal quality standards and controls; 
  • Coordinate between multiple contributors to achieve project goals and improve organizational synergy;
  • Develop and document best research practices for support content offerings;  
  • Serve as internal subject matter expert for content research projects;  
  • Advocating internally for our customers and connecting the dots between issues they are experiencing and solutions;
  • Break down complex concepts into smaller, more manageable pieces;
  • Assisting as needed with other Legal Content initiatives, including content sourcing and template building;
  • Be able to adapt your process to the needs of the situation;
  • Document and recreate customer issues to help troubleshoot.  

What you may have:

  • 4+ years of legal experience at a paralegal or higher level;
  • Technical aptitude with ability and desire to learn new technologies;
  • A strong understanding of cloud-based legal technologies and research tools, together with a  demonstrated understanding of the needs of legal professionals;
  • Comfort working with large, complicated data sets; 
  • Self-motivated and flexible with experience in a fast-paced environment, including managing multiple projects and competing priorities;
  • Able to work successfully in a collaborative or team environment;
  • Well-organized, reliable, and resourceful;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Strong and demonstrable logical reasoning and analytical thinking abilities;
  • Humility plus strong opinions that are loosely held;
  • Genuine empathy, strong interpersonal skills and ability to make customers feel appreciated and valued;
  • Willing to adopt new procedures, methods, or softwares on short notice;
  • Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited law school preferred.
