Head of Fundraising Operations and Analytics at GiveWell

The Head of Fundraising Operations and Analytics will play a pivotal role in understanding and scaling GiveWell’s fundraising work. They will own everything related to our fundraising information: the questions we seek to answer, the processes to collect information, and the methods to analyze it. This position will report to our Director of Development and manage a small team to set goals, measure performance, and run an efficient, dynamic fundraising team.

This opportunity is unique:

  • Thorny, interesting, and strategically important research problems. You’ll develop the strategies that drive GiveWell’s fundraising. This will require substantial creativity and flexibility—you’ll need to use quantitative and qualitative research methods, triangulate approaches, and construct and test various hypotheses. The work combines elements of marketing analytics, customer lifetime value analysis, behavioral economics, and other disciplines.
  • Unique donor pyramid. Our donor base ranges from billionaires who give tens or hundreds of millions of dollars each year to a “long tail” of individuals giving under $100. You’ll be responsible for understanding the nuances between different segments of donors and the processes that serve them.
  • Impact pathway. GiveWell’s work saves and improves lives around the world. This role will optimize our efforts to reach our ambitious fundraising goals. According to our research estimates, achieving those goals could lead to around 20,000 additional lives saved.
  • High pay, high expectations, high performance. We maintain a high-performing, collegial culture, and our salaries are competitive with nonprofit peers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Set a practical research agenda and execute on it. You will build an evidence base about GiveWell’s fundraising efforts. You’ll both 1) work to understand the reasons for the growth we’ve experienced and 2) develop hypotheses about how we can improve this trajectory. Your work will encompass the entire range of the research lifecycle, including framing the right questions, gathering data, conducting analysis, and using insights to drive business decisions.
  • Help define our fundraising strategy. You will work closely with our Director of Development, Head of Philanthropy, and Head of Communications to develop our fundraising strategies. You’ll shape our strategies to ensure that they are analytically sound and responsive to external factors that might affect our fundraising, like market performance and philanthropic trends. You’ll also ensure that we’re collecting the data necessary to monitor and evaluate our decisions.
  • Manage our fundraising support team. We expect the Head of Fundraising Operations and Analytics to manage our development operations team, which focuses on donations processing and data collection. You may also manage other administrative or technical staff who support our fundraising work.
  • Own the full stack of tools we use for fundraising. We use Salesforce as our CRM and a variety of other software tools to gather, analyze, and present our data. You’ll own the implementation of these tools and identify if or when we should adopt new ones.
  • Do anything else that helps us achieve our mission. We hope you’ll come with ideas.

Who might be a good fit

You might be a good fit for this work if:

  • You are a strategist who can develop a plan to solve open-ended business questions, even with limited or incomplete data. You can translate these questions into appropriate research projects that balance rigor with speed.
  • You can develop efficient and scalable processes for the team to implement. You have experience architecting a complex system for a team. You’re comfortable integrating new tools, designing automations, and customizing a process for specific goals.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills. You are ready to manage a team of 3-5. You can effectively communicate your priorities and learnings to the rest of the organization.
  • You can establish clear, motivating goals for the fundraising team. You can create systems to measure progress towards those goals throughout the year.
  • You are detail-oriented and can identify when teams or processes may be off-track. You are meticulous, can identify subtle trends, and begin the investigation into their causes.
  • You are excited to work in a growing, ambitious, mission-driven organization

We imagine that candidates for this position could come from varied backgrounds, including revenue operations, information technology, market research, consulting, and so on. However, there’s no particular background that we are looking for beyond the skills listed above.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many of the skills and experiences described above. However, there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate. If you are on the fence about applying because you are unsure whether you are qualified, we would strongly encourage you to apply. We hope you’ll also tell us which elements of the role you’re most and least excited about.
