VP of Engineering at Buildkite
About The Role We're looking for a Head of Engineering to build and support our product engineering teams. You’ll be the manager of engineering managers, and spend time planning team structures and hiring needs. Buildkite is used by some of the best engineering organisations in the world and we have great ambitions for how we can make the product even better. You’ll play a vital role in how we go about that, partnering with the Head of Product to help us define what we build and how we build this to ensure we continue to make it.
What a typical day may look like: Video calls with others on the team to provide feedback, support team leads or solve problems, or to just say hi.Consult with Customer Success, Sales and Engineers to lead security practices across the entire organisation and implement best practices that ensure stability, security and compliance.Driving best practices and productive engineering culture as we scaleCollaborate with the Head of Product to effectively support our cross functional teams with the resources they need to do their best work.Collaborate with Business Operations for data, metrics, and reportingSpend time exploring the high-level architecture decisions made by our teams, to ensure they are alignedCollaborate with Head of People to plan team growth, and hiring plansParticipate in leadership team strategy sessions and board meetings
This job is for you if: Have people leadership skills. You will develop our high performing engineering culture as we grow so we’re looking for experience leading engineering teams.Are a good communicator. You should value empathy for your teams and customers and be able to articulate your ideas and feelings when writing or speaking. You’ll need to clearly communicate technical concepts to a wide audience.Like solving problems. You are comfortable working with folks to solve problems. If you don’t know the answer immediately, you will be comfortable digging into the problem until you can help find a solution.Have your finger on the pulse when it comes to industry trends. You should understand what technologies like Bazel and Kubernetes are, and how they fit into developer workflows.Enjoy mentoring others. You provide guidance to both managers and engineers on how they can advance their careers.Think strategically. You will think about objectives, context and concessions we’ll need to stay ahead of our competition.Know how to budget. Developer teams use lots of tools, and they all cost money. You should know your spend and prioritise optimization work when it makes sense.Are comfortable with working remotely. We are a remote-first company, so you will need to be comfortable working by yourself and taking initiative when team members are offline.
Salary range $200,000 AUD - $240,000 AUD $210,000 NZD - $250,000 NZD
